United Mutation was one of the best and most strangely unique bands to come out of the early 80's DC Hardcore scene. Their sound ranged from fast and chaotic in their demo beginnings to an atmospheric, melodic groove on their final release, "Rainbow Person"(a punk rock masterpiece). The originality in their music certainly set them apart from the other bands of the time, but what many fans and fellow hardcore enthusiasts believe to be the most significant about UM's sound in particular is the rough, crazed vocals of frontman Mike Brown that are claimed to be the first ever done in that style.
