At 14 years old, Bowman helped to form Kittie with classmate Mercedes Lander and Mercedes' sister, Morgan Lander. She played guitar and performed background vocals for the band as heard on their Spit album and the Paperdoll EP. She parted ways with Kittie in August 2001 for undisclosed reasons because she wanted the band to go in a different direction but the other members refused.[1] While on a plane from Ontario to New Jersey, 17-year-old Bowman was skimming through a Tom Clancy novel when she came upon the term amphibious assault.
